I lead a research team at Zhejiang University (Chair Professor, since 2022) focused on developing foundation models for reliable deployment in diverse, real-world open-set scenarios — a challenge typically addressed through zero-shot inference. My work spans generative AI, perception systems for autonomous robotics, and AI-accelerated scientific discovery.
Before moving to China, I spent 20 years in Australia, having held a Full Professorship at the University of Adelaide (now Adelaide University), with appointments spanning academia and industry, including Amazon Australia, National ICT Australia (NICTA), and the Australian National University. In 2012, I was awarded an ARC Future Fellowship in AI.
My degrees are from Nanjing University (BSc, Kuang Yaming Honors School; MSc, School of Electronic Science and Engineering), the Australian National University (MPhil), and the University of Adelaide (PhD).

Open source toolbox for multiple instance-level detection and recognition tasks developed by my team
The FCOS paper is regarded as one of the most impactful contributions in the field. FCOS is an anchor-free object detector, which solves object detection problems in a per-pixel prediction fashion. Most recent anchor-free object detectors employ FCOS as a basis. FCOS is included in pytorch
SOLO ver2 and BiSeNet ver2 are included in Matlab Computer Vision Toolbox (R2025a).
